A Seat-Compatibility Enquiry Checklist for Taxi Drivers
Lasting ComfortShare
“Can I use a lumbar cushion?” is often too broad for a useful answer. A clear enquiry identifies the vehicle, seat, accessory and concern you want to resolve.

Prepare a short note
Include the car model and year, seat type if known, and whether you own, rent or share the vehicle. Describe the seat issue in everyday terms: a setting that will not hold, contact that feels too prominent or difficulty finding a suitable driving position.
If you are considering an accessory, include its exact name, dimensions, thickness and attachment method. Do not substitute a photo of a similar-looking pad for the product details.
Ask the provider or maker
- Is this accessory permitted in this vehicle?
- Does the answer cover this exact seat and attachment?
- Are there restrictions involving belts, head restraints or seat-mounted equipment?
- Should a seat inspection or settings demonstration come first?
- Who will confirm the decision and any next action?
For a rented or shared car, ask the provider to identify the right compatibility and maintenance route. Ownership permission alone does not establish suitability.
Keep a useful record
Save the enquiry and response. If the answer is generic or refers you elsewhere, follow that up instead of treating the lack of an explicit refusal as approval. Do not use an accessory for driving while suitability is unresolved.
Keep personal health information out of a routine vehicle note unless it is needed through an appropriate support process. If symptoms affect driving, seek suitable advice and notify the provider of the operational concern.
Start with the seat’s own adjustments
A clearer understanding of the built-in settings or a repair may be the right outcome. HSE’s work-driving guidance treats seating as part of driver health.
Before fitting a seating accessory in a vehicle, confirm that the exact item is permitted for your seat by the vehicle maker. Keep restraints, airbags, head restraints and control access clear, and follow any operator requirements for work vehicles.
