Dining Table Too High for Working? Check Your Feet and Shoulders

Lasting Comfort

A dining table can be a perfectly useful occasional workspace and still feel awkward for a full working day. If you lift your shoulders to type, then raise the chair and find your feet hanging, you are dealing with a height mismatch.

Start with the work surface

Sit as you normally would and notice whether you reach up to the keyboard. A laptop stand can improve screen height, but it does not lower a table or fix keyboard reach. With a separate keyboard, you can judge the working height more clearly.

Where the chair is height-adjustable, find a position that lets your shoulders settle while your hands reach the keys. Then look below the table: are your feet supported, and is there enough room for your thighs? A fixed dining chair cannot provide the same range of adjustment.

A footrest has a different job from a back pad

A stable footrest may provide foot contact after a suitable chair-height adjustment. A back cushion adds thickness behind you. It will not bridge the floor-to-foot gap. A seat cushion raises you, which can improve reach to a high table but make unsupported feet more noticeable.

Avoid balancing the chair on improvised blocks or stacking loose cushions. If reaching the table requires a position that feels unstable or leaves very little thigh clearance, that setup needs a different solution.

Keep a note of the mismatch

  • What feels awkward: raised shoulders, unsupported feet or cramped legs?
  • Which height settings are available on the chair?
  • Does the problem remain with a separate keyboard?
  • Could another table or workspace offer more suitable clearance?

This gives you something concrete to discuss with your employer. HSE’s home-working guidance includes workstation assessment; household furniture may need attention.

You do not have to solve every workspace problem by buying your own accessories. Once the basic height and clearance work, you can decide whether extra back cushioning is still relevant.
